Ce que nous laissons vivre · Volume 1

Progress protects us. But who comes first?

Robots deliver meals, clinics offer advanced treatments and Paris carries on with its day. After an outage in Rive-Neuve, doctor Nora Delmas discovers that a patient lost her protection eleven days earlier. An apparently technical decision starts an inquiry that reaches into a family and an industrial group. This novel is forthcoming in French.

ENTER THE STORY

One patient. One file. Eleven days of silence.

Nora treats the person in front of her. Lucien, her former husband, wants to know who cancelled the protection. Their daughter Alma hopes to turn indignation into action. Garance, heir to the group under scrutiny, understands the price of the guarantees others condemn. None of their perspectives explains everything. The opening volume introduces the trilogy through ordinary gestures, conversations and an administrative anomaly with immediate human consequences.

A golden engraving of a clinic entrance in the trilogy’s Paris.01

A future with familiar streets

Cafés remain open, deliveries arrive and people go to work. Automation makes daily life easier. Social divisions appear in the ability to choose, avoid a wait or have a refusal reconsidered.

An inquiry with intimate consequences

Tracing responsibility can expose someone close. Evidence can unite protesters while weakening people who still depend on the system. Suspense develops through these competing pressures.

Divided loyalties

Nora, Lucien, Alma and Garance bring different interests and attachments to the conflict. Following their perspectives means understanding their reasons while examining the costs their decisions impose on others.

A FUTURE AT HUMAN SCALE

The city works. Not every door opens.

This world does not begin after society disappears. Institutions, companies and families remain in place. Exclusion is embedded in their everyday operation. The Rive-Neuve outage exposes what has been hidden behind waiting times, procedures and contracts. Progress becomes a question asked in a treatment room, from a patient’s point of view.

THE PLEASURE OF READING

Where to begin Ce que nous laissons vivre.

Start with the first volume to meet the characters and understand the origins of their disagreements. The trilogy is intended for adult readers who enjoy social speculation, family conflicts and psychological drama. Technology shapes the setting and its power relationships; no specialist scientific knowledge is needed. This English presentation describes a French-language novel.

CONTINUE THE DISCOVERY

When a procedure becomes a family story

The novel starts with a gap: a treatment is possible, but the protection that provides access has disappeared. A single file connects the organization of society with the lives of its inhabitants. Understanding a machine is not enough; the decisions and interests it serves also need to be examined.

Les Vies de réserve opens a continuing story. Disagreements matter as much as encounters, and the same truth affects different people in different ways. The first volume establishes the relationships the following books will put under pressure.
