Veyre and the cost of stopping

Veyre’s rails mark a boundary between two ways to die. Between them, a city must go on living. Daria Venn faces a crisis that cuts through her workshop and her family. Stopping can make resistance possible, but the convoys left standing leave needs unmet elsewhere. How do you resist in a world that cannot stop moving?

  • A city on the move
  • Work and family ties
  • The second world in the series

A city rolls onward, and whole lives take shape around its rhythm: work, family and ordinary routines. When Halte stops, that routine becomes an emergency. Daria Venn faces a crisis in which getting moving again cannot be separated from the price people are asked to pay.

Choose this world if social tension draws you in as much as mystery. The moving city makes the inhabitants’ dependence on each other tangible. Following Nacre, Veyre reveals another part of the year shared by the five novels, close to the people who keep the city running.

THE ILLUSTRATED A+ PRESENTATION

The Year of Five Worlds

Five worlds: turquoise ocean, copper desert, green forest, airborne cities, and violet ice.

Five worlds. One shared year.

In the Orme system, a decision made on one planet can overturn a life on another.

Inside The City at the Edge of Day

On Veyre, cities travel between searing heat and bitter cold. Their inhabitants work, raise children, and grow old in a world that cannot afford to stand still. Then Halte brakes without warning.

In the mechanism, Daria Venn recognizes a part that belongs to her. As anger spreads through the workshops, she sets out to discover what happened—and what her coworkers are keeping quiet. Her daughter’s story draws her beyond the rails, where the city’s interests collide with those of other worlds.

The convoys carry more than freight. A shipment held back can deprive a patient of something essential to survival. To defend her own people, Daria must reckon with the price paid by those she will never meet.

The City at the Edge of Day combines social tension, mystery, and family ties in a city on the move. Book Two of The Year of Five Worlds follows a local struggle whose consequences reach across the Orme system.

How the five stories connect

A shipment held on Veyre is missed on another planet. Relief granted on Aeral commits lives on Iskar. An identity recovered on Nacre changes the meaning of a file elsewhere. The connections grow out of practical decisions, and no character can see all their consequences.

At the heart of these exchanges lies a question that runs through the year: who can consent on behalf of the absent? Behind medical care, wages, and rescues, commitments made for other people become pieces of a shared mystery.

Each novel follows its own characters and local conflict. Reading all five reveals the other sides of the same events. The book order, from Nacre to Iskar, follows the gradual disclosure of their connections.
